Willis Alan Ramsey: The Single-Album Masterpiece That Defined Texas Songwriting
Last reviewed: October 27, 2026
Willis Alan Ramsey released one self-titled studio album, on Shelter Records in 1972, and then largely stepped away from recording. That single record has been treasured by Texas songwriters ever since.
The album
Recorded while Ramsey was in his early twenties, the album is warm, relaxed and meticulously crafted. Shelter, the label co-founded by Leon Russell and Denny Cordell, gave him room to make it his way.
The songs
- 'Muskrat Candlelight' — later reworked as 'Muskrat Love', a hit for Captain & Tennille
- 'Spider John' — recorded by Jerry Jeff Walker
- 'Satin Sheets'
- 'Northeast Texas Women'
- 'Goodbye Old Missoula'
His influence
Ramsey's songs have been covered by many artists, and Texas songwriters including Lyle Lovett have spoken admiringly of his work. His careful writing became a benchmark for the singer-songwriter side of the Austin scene.
