Gary P. Nunn: Songwriter, Gonzo Co-Founder, and Texas Icon

Last reviewed: October 27, 2026

Gary P. Nunn is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist best known for writing 'London Homesick Blues'. A key member of The Lost Gonzo Band, he went on to a long solo career built on songs about Texas life.

Early years

Born in Oklahoma and raised in West Texas, Nunn played in rock and pop bands as a young man, including groups around Lubbock, before arriving in Austin as the progressive country scene was taking shape.

With the Gonzos

Nunn played keyboards, guitar and bass and sang with the band behind Jerry Jeff Walker, and with The Lost Gonzo Band on their own records. His lead vocal on 'London Homesick Blues' made him the voice of one of Texas music's most famous choruses. See London Homesick Blues.

Solo career

Going solo, Nunn built a following across Texas and beyond with songs like 'What I Like About Texas' and 'Last Thing I Needed First Thing This Morning' (later a hit for Willie Nelson). He became a fixture of Texas dance halls and festivals.
