Recording ¡Viva Terlingua!: An Oral History of Luckenbach Dancehall, August 1973
Last reviewed: October 27, 2026
¡Viva Terlingua! was recorded in August 1973 inside the old dance hall in Luckenbach, Texas, using a mobile recording setup brought out from the city. The result sounds like a party that happened to get taped — and that is exactly why it lasted.
Why Luckenbach?
Luckenbach was little more than a general store and a dance hall in the Hill Country near Fredericksburg. Its relaxed atmosphere suited Walker, who wanted to avoid the stiffness of a city studio and capture the band the way audiences heard it.
How the sessions worked
Recording gear was set up in and around the hall, and the band played over several days, with locals and friends drifting in as an audience. Some songs were cut with a crowd, others in quieter run-throughs. The album was then shaped from the best moments.
The songs
- 'Gettin' By' — Walker's wry opening statement
- 'Desperados Waiting for a Train' — Guy Clark's classic
- 'Sangria Wine'
- 'Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother' — Ray Wylie Hubbard's tongue-in-cheek anthem
- 'London Homesick Blues' — sung by Gary P. Nunn (full story)
- 'Backslider's Wine' — a Michael Martin Murphey song
Legacy
The album is widely seen as one of the defining records of Texas progressive country. It sits near the top of our list of essential albums of the era, and it shaped the partnership described in Jerry Jeff Walker and the Gonzos.
