Bob Livingston: The Gonzo Groove and Musical Diplomacy
Last reviewed: October 27, 2026
Bob Livingston is a bassist, singer and songwriter whose melodic playing anchored The Lost Gonzo Band. In later decades he became known for taking Texas songs to audiences overseas.
From Lubbock to Austin
Like several of his peers, Livingston came out of the Lubbock music community. He worked with Michael Martin Murphey before joining the circle around Jerry Jeff Walker.
The Gonzo bass
Livingston's bass lines were supple and song-focused, helping give the band its rolling, danceable feel. He also sang and wrote for the group. See Jerry Jeff Walker and the Gonzos for the band's peak years.
Musical diplomacy
In later years Livingston toured internationally, including cultural exchange tours, sharing Texas music and songwriting with audiences in many countries. It was a fitting extension of the scene's open-hearted spirit.
